Flash Tips: Hinting

These two animations show the effects of "hinting" in Flash. Hinting allows you to direct how one shape turns into another and to make sure the transition is as smooth as possible.

The animation on the left does not contain any hinting. Notice how the image is badly distorted as the animation moves from one image to another. That is because Flash is making up some bad transitions.

The animation on the right does have hinting. Notice that the transitions are smoother. That is because I added hints that told Flash to move the arm from one image to the arm in another. The foot from one to the foot in another.

Programs such as Illustrator or FreeHand do a primitive form of hinting when they allow you to direct a blend to move from one point to another. but Flash's hinting is the most impressive that I know of.
